Host Community

Family Promise of Albuquerque’s shelter program relies on a partnership of interfaith congregations and other volunteer groups to help local families facing homelessness. Our  provide lodging, meals and hospitality to families in need. For families in the program, each day begins with breakfast at the day center with volunteers, followed by a van ride to drop the children at school and bring the parents back to our Day Center. The parents attend skills classes, develop resumes, set goals, and attend case management sessions during the hours the children attend school. In the evening, The children return from school and the families prepare for the evening.   Volunteers provide dinner and spend some quality time with the families breaking bread together. The evening hours are for homework, relaxing and family fun time, as they would be with any family. Each day ends with the family all together, in one room, under one roof.

Local houses of worship provide meals and volunteers at our static site facility.  A host congregation team of volunteers may be involved with the following:

  • Cooking and hosting dinner

  • Spending the evening with families, talking, tutoring kids or playing games

  • Coordinating children’s crafts & activities

  • Donating necessary supplies for the hosting week

  • Setting up and breaking down guest families’ rooms

Some volunteer activities are currently suspended due to COVID-19

  • Each congregation hosts families for just one week,  approximately four times a year

  • Guests consist of four to eight families   (30 children & adults max)

  • Family Promise of Albuquerque runs criminal background checks and drug screenings on all program participants

  • Family Promise of Albuquerque has a driver transports the families every morning.
